Personal space is something we all have and is what keeps us safe.

Joe Biden, former US Vice President has recently been in the news regarding allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

Mr Biden addressed these claims in a video posted on Twitter, stating he has always tried to make a 'human connection' , by shaking hands, hugging people and grabbing men and women by the shoulders. He has mentioned that he understands the social norms have begun to shift and 'the boundaries of protecting personal space have been reset- and I get it' finishing with ' I will be more mindful and respectful of people's personal space'.

Everyone regardless of age, gender and capacity is entitled to their personal space and their boundaries respected.

What is personal space?

A space around you to keep you comfortable and safe. It can be as big as you want it to be but is measured as roughly an arm’s length all the way around you, roughly a metre.

We at RESOLVEit say that you allow in those you want or invite into your personal space rather than just those you know and trust as sometimes those people want to cause you harm.

How can I protect my personal space?

We at RESOLVEit teach what is known as a Shield. This is a non-aggressive way to protect your space whilst easy to remember and suitable for all ages.

Stand with one foot in front of the other and place your hands out in front of you with open palms, it's non aggressive calm open body language and as if you're saying 'stop'. Move back to increase your space between you and the other person moving away to get to safety and get help.
