By George O'Dowd  Apr 11th, 2018

We cannot control the thinking or the actions of rapists, but we can empower women to defend themselves to prevent and survive an assault .   We need multiple strategies and self-defence training is a good one

Across England and Wales every year it is estimated  that between 60,000 and 95,000 people are victims of rape with only around 20% being reported and a resulting 1070 becoming convictions .

Studies show it's a worldwide endemic and research has consistently shown that fighting back is actually the most effective strategy.

Today (11.04.18) we were at CCYP (Cwmbran Centre for Young People) for Bron Afon's Go Girls event , talking to females from age 15 upwards  about their experiences, safety tips and awareness as being a key factor in keeping themselves safe.  We also taught some self defence techniques that are effective regardless of size difference , strength and agility.

The session was enjoyed by all, some of the feedback we received;

'empowering'

'great. Perfect information'

'life changing , I love it'

Recent studies indicate that "sexual assault" is an endemic problem worldwide.

In Britain, the grim statistics ("one in three women", "one in five women")  (see infographic below).

Of the estimated 78,000 rapes in England and Wales, every year, only about 20% a reported and only 1,070 become convictions!

Fighting back remains the most effective strategy to thwart sexual assaults

As a matter of fact, research conducted since the 70’s has consistently shown that fighting back is actually the most effective strategy to thwart sexual assaults.

"perpetrators are 100% RESPONSIBLE but that does not mean that intended victims and survivors are 100% POWERLESS" Susan Schorn

 We cannot control the thinking or the actions of rapists, but we can empower women to defend themselves to prevent and survive an assault.

In our fight against harassment and sexual violence, we need multiple strategies and self-defence training is a good one.
